five hundred and seventy-three moons ago (give or take), thunder tillman and his personal shaman emerged from the esp institute with an epic debut ep of baked psychedelics entitled jaguar mirror. we now bare witness to the duo’s glorious follow-up as they initiate us into the night school of universal wisdom. these two cosmic jokers possess a vibrant and fearless sense of exploration that knows no boundaries, as if their dreams translate directly into song and their bodies exist merely to channel music they’ve tapped into from another world, one where influences are uncharted and any instrument imaginable is available at their fingertips. as with jaguar mirror, their grasp of all things analogue begins with guitar laying the slightly imperfect foundation for four harmonious narratives, a journey that begins with a fast paced gallop across vast landscapes in search of the incan god of thunder, catequil, and gently concludes with us lying horizontally to absorb sporadic beams of healing light. the discourse throughout night school of universal wisdom is as charming as it is exquisite, orienting the listener with a bouquet of warm tones whilst layering plies of musical dialogue so subtle they require repeated study. thunder tillman manage to weave the past into future without diverting to pastiche, successfully merging their characterized production with melodic mastery and a sense of humor, a creative achievement that accredits them as two of our most esteemed scholars.

p.e.a.r.l. is no stranger to the weekend circuit inner circle. having released his desolation ep on the london label in 2015, his unique and refreshing productions slot comfortably in to the label s sonic aesthetic. pulsating, submerged field recordings and natural sounds bristle next to menacingly hewn tones, rhythms and textures, creating a strange and disorientating environment across 4 parts. ep opener body arched i encapsulates this alien-esque landscape, beckoning us into the p.e.a.r.l. sound-world. slowly unwinding drones gradually draw us in, layers of almost synthetic jungle sounds, field recordings and eerie atmospherics create images of unseen landscapes in our minds. one gets the impression that is merely the calm before the storm, it will be a long, dark and revealing night. second part body arched ii ups the ante considerably, a blistering assault on the senses. cavernous kick-drums dance with repeated synth lines and synewaves creating a narcotic, unforgiving and swirling miasma of epic proportions. body arched iii opens the second side of this formidable slab of vinyl. the energy levels are still high, the mood somewhat foreboding. unapologetic, urgent and oozing kinetic energy this 3rd movement continues on a journey that will sweep you deeper into the blackest night, all systems failed, flying blind. in the right hands a piece like this can wield colossal power. the fourth and final part of body arched taps into a more psychedelic vein, a minimalistic mantra-esque piece that continually spirals to the very outer edges of restraint. listen closely and you can hear the shamans feet kicking up dust in the clearing. a pensive and sparse piece and the perfect note on which p.e.a.r.l. will leave us bewildered.

the martinez brothers return to their own cuttin headz label with a new two track ep. joint custody features collaborations with jerome sydenham, mathew jonson and martin buttrich. first track no pop is a 12 minute acid-influenced workout, channelling both the martinez brothers and sydenhams taste for faster-paced dancefloor-ready basslines alongside jonsons ear for the surreal high-pitched chirps pitch down into classic acid stabs whilst a metallic distorted vocal echoes above clapping hi-hats. affection deficit disorder alongside martin buttrich continues this sense of quirkiness, the titles eponymous acronym repeated over a darker, grooving bassline and spacey keys. the duos final collaboration with the producer, 9 pound hammer appears as a bonus third track on the vinyl release. the joint custody ep is the martinez brothers first release since the incredible success of last years stuff in the trunk featuring miss kittin. the release follows the pairs highly anticipated gig at the launch of landmark new london venue, printworks.

after solemnly closing out the spc-series in 2016, jeroen search hands in his second ep of the year for figure. carrying his signature style, these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers. both tracks on the a-side feature big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through, whether it be the penetrating bleeps of deduced or the piercing rides on interval. things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of steady pulse firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. the jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of endless circles may seem like it being the odd one out, but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds, making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed ep.

nena’s “feuer und flamme” (german for “fire and flame”, with the additional figurative meaning of “great enthusiasm”) was released in 1985. it’s the third album by german pop band nena and the fourth studio album of its singer, gabriele “nena” kerner. the album was a success, reaching no. 2 in germany.
prompted by the success of “99 luftballons” (1984), which included english-language versions of songs from the band’s first two albums, nena recreated “feuer und flamme” in english as “it’s all in the game” (1985), with lyrics by canadian singer lisa dalbello. the experiment failed commercially and was not repeated with the band’s next album. gabriele kerner recorded a new bilingual german-english version of “anyplace, anywhere, anytime” with kim wilde in 2002.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

forgotten idols lie smashed and scattered across the floor. dissonant undercurrents coerce a riptide of shattered beats as duran duran duran speeds into sight and docks directly into your neurological pathways. tracks swarm into your mind effortlessly dismantling the techno mainframe. refracted acid takes ‘sexus’ to a place where famished ghosts leer at each other across a mist-infused steam room. repeated listenings reveal new fissures, fresh layers emerge as we scrape away at the glacial enormity of this techno scree-face. redemption is in sight as we take a final pasting on ‘marathon man’, a track so banging as to provoke a wry smile on the face of any seasoned raver. at its climax it screeches under the weight of its intensity, flinging its subjects into a feral transcendence.

steve o sullivan s mosaic split series is back with a fresh instalment for you in 2017 as the boss continues to discover and compile music from artists new and old for the well-received series that marked his return a few years ago. focusing on three slabs of high grade deepness for release number six, the a side comes from a firm mosaic favourite dean decosta, a long-time friend and contributor to the imprint. hailing from california, his music has always held a timeless quality and subtlety that is in key with the label and steve s ethos. stripping everything back to basics, recon feels like a tribute to the last days of summer and the warm coastal breeze that inhabits the shore in decosta s native california. filling the space with warm pads and twinkling synths, the bass end neatly pulses and tweaks throughout as it elegantly moves to a spatial groove that seems to freeze the very moment in time you inhabit. complimented perfectly by within without, leeds lad bobby o donnell serves up an instant ace for the b side as he fuses a tough ended kick with dub tinged rhodes chords, pattering hats and swirling melody: evoking the kind of uplifting vibe that won t go amiss with djs and dancers alike. expect some heavy rotation and smiling faces on this. last, but not least, rising swedish producer sean dixon lays down a fusion of omar s styled synth jams to dub driven house. by taking elements of the classic and injecting a fresh angle, dixon creates a unique space in the sound that builds and builds, deserving both your time and attention. with repeated play, you can t but help admire his craft. if you haven t already checked out his catalogue don t get caught sleeping.

alix perez and spectrasoul have earned their stripes as pioneers of the deeper and more melodic side of the genre. these gentlemen are known for their versatility, and their progressive attitudes toward music. both acts came up through shogun, and their first collaboration forsaken quickly became a benchmark for quality in drum and bass. the synergy ep is 4 tracks of concise, stripped back, mature and soulful music that bumps. perez and spectrasoul have recently formed their own imprints, and as a celebration of this, the synergy ep is a joint release between the artists labels - ish chat music (spectrasoul), and 1985 music (alix perez). the ep has seen repeated support from dbridge, skeptical, lsb, lenzman, marky, ivy lab and others.

dominique lawalree (b. 1954) is a composer born and based in brussels. first meeting is lawalree s first archival release to date. culled from four different albums originally self-published on his private label editions walrus, circa 1978-1982, this compilation highlights the composer s unique sense of ambient and minimal composition. originally considered for release on brian eno s obscure records, lawalree s music is now no longer hidden. in this collection the listener finds the sounds of piano, synthesizers, percussion, wurlitzer, organ, and voice, all performed by lawalree. using these tools dominique creates miniature themes that gallop across the speakers in slow motion, stretching our normal sense of dynamics and color, effortlessly widening the stereo plane. on musique satieerique dominique pays homage to the influence of satie with simple repeated piano figures and a lush field of organs and flutes. and on other selections, like -le maison des 5 elements,- he takes a more wistful, ambient approach, layering keyboard lines, and invoking found/tape sounds to create a hypnogogic world of his own. childlike in its playfulness and surreal to the bone, the music spins like a carrousel placed inside the rothko chapel. lawalree s sense of timbre, tone, and overarching composition is like an impression of a home movie whose charm lies in its knowledge of intimacy, shared by few? an incantation of innocence. a quiet, understated music that is both touching and elegant gavin bryars

“mirror test” conjures that rare mood between darkness and elation, contemplation and celebration, and drives it home with an infectious, jacking rhythm section which recalls the late-80s ny club music of boyd jarvis and paul simpson, and labels like easy street and fourth floor, but imbues the sound with a toughness and precision only possible today. analog synth figures, glassy and angular, ricochet around the track, trading jabs with funky snare work and robotic, stabby chord patterns to create a hook-laden machine groove which demands repeated listening.
the record’s b-side feature, “replace yourself,” is the subtler, dreamier, more futuristic of the two. unmistakably urban with its swinging, bottom-heavy groove and strange, architectural chord work, it seduces and transports. “replace yourself” dares you to do exactly that.

ondon-based duo jamka return with inter alia, the latest evidence of their patient, intimate relationship with their analogue machines. from the start there’s a sense of event – we encounter clear, interlaced electronic textures, powerful analogue drones and well-placed beats. the tracks aren’t soundscapes so much as fertile electronic soundfields. patemp continuously expands in an incredibly subtle but powerful way and shows that jamka’s technical skills don’t preclude an emotional touch. on the tight and minimal anazmo, the coiled energy bears traces of minimal techno and radical electronica, but it’s beyond either of these. while the album passes quickly, it’s full of detail and the thoughtfulness and craft that have gone into it are evident. dwa offers the chance to appreciate the flow and the sheen of its analogue textures – the modernist romance of the power line hum and its promise of technological-cultural progress. jamka are known for their dynamic live performances and this energy is almost tangible on derazor. the stately igora is a strong, bold close to the album, offering surprises right till the end. the sharp, metallic details ripple through the mix and an anthemic sequence shines through. inter alia makes clear that jamka are worthy inheritors of slovakia’s proud late modernist traditions of radical architecture and electronic music. this is a work of craft that demands respect and repeated listening.

having done such wonderful work alongside wolf muller on the sound of glades album, cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on emotional response. the german producer s ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on u but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. djs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of ann, where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album s most club-ready moments. theres a strong variety of tones and moods across youth sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of running to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of prismatic prolog, and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

2016 repress , having provided a remix for the label back in 2010 ethyl & flori now release their first full ep for the label, the last ninja kicks things off with an unmistakable old school tech-house feel which to us at fof recalled the classic architecture dj mix by terry francis with its punchy kick, sharp percussion and imbued uplifting warmth. fornjot by flori on the flip is a different proposition, although still deeply entrenched in a throwback to yesterdays production stylings, this is a much more techno orientated groove with the tracks repeated metallic bass riff anchoring the track in a gloriously hypnotic yet fresh way.

the first release from iridite in 8 years sees them returning to their roots with a multi artist release of glasgow house and techno at its finest. the fourth release on iridite from simplon does not disappoint deeply unusual but emotionally charged techno, it twists and turns throughout and bears repeated listening to fully understand it’s depths. for fans of shake, terrance dixon, model 500 and futuristic sounds. fresh from his two releases on the nuclear family, laurence hughes revives his elijah moniker for the most dancefloor friendly track on the ep. label boss jason brunton heads up the rear with january, a deep slice of spaced out four/four action with a sting in the tail.

mothball record starts its 2016 release schedule with a bang by releasing their first lp. originally produced in a tiny edition of only 100 copies back in 87, this dark masterpiece from prolific italian artist deca finally appears as an official reissue on mothball (in collaboration with bordello a parigi) remastered from the original tapes. -synthetic lips- is an absolutely diverse album spanning industrial, synth-pop, ambient and even elements of new age...some tracks will hit immediately and others will reward repeated listening.

nice price deal !!! coruscating cut-ups yanked still dripping and yowling from the belly of the beast. dazzling and invigorating, scary and discombobulating. ‘psychic driving was a psychiatric procedure in which patients were subjected to a continuously repeated audio message on a looped tape, in order to alter their behaviour… often hundreds of thousands of repetitions of a single statement over the course of their treatment. they were also concurrently administered muscular paralytic drugs such as curare… the psychic driving procedure was a chronological precursor to cameron’s depatterning, involving massive doses of ect combined with similarly large doses of psychedelic drugs like lsd. the intent was to break down the subject’s personality — theoretically psychic driving could then be used with some efficacy in establishing a new personality’ (hanson records).

mysterious hardware tinkerer stephan stl laubner is back with a 3 track + locked groove ep on the london based imprint mutual friend recordings entitled listen up! mind puzzlin is exactly that with a luscious lead line that will twist your head accomponied by stls signature rough and overdriven percussion. smile function has a more ominous tone with repeated guitar plucks that plant themselves into your consciousness. stl builds the groove expertly whilst retaining an other-worldly feel to the track. wrong is a real groover with a growling bassline accomponied by weird and wonderful interwoven patterns coaxed out of stls synths. the locked groove, titled listen up! loop is a nice bonus for the more adventurous dj out there.

brack, the new imprint from uk-born berlin-based producer bnjmn, is back in quick succession with another strong transmission from the label boss. after plunging into dirtier, darker sonic waters on the pitchfork-tipped brack001, chromed continues the descent. while the propulsive rhythms and skilfully stacked samples remain intact, these 4 tracks are imbued with subtler elements that become more apparent with repeated listens. drums don’t just bang, they scrape, stab and shudder, and the typically mesmeric synth-lines are swathed in analogue hiss and seething low-end. idiosyncratic aural details have always been a specialty of the young producer, but here they rise to the fore. the rapidly flourishing sound world that is brack comes more into focus, and it appears it is even more intricate and musically rich than on first glance.

33-10-3402, also known as serbian-born artist/producer nenad markovic, returns to the esp institute for the third release in his opium den and whorehouse inspired mecanica series. slow port is a cacophonous track, skillfully composed of an erratic barrage of percussive klinks and klanks as you might find in an automotive factory pistons, gears, quips, cranks, but despite its industrial instrumentation, nenad manages to extract a beautifully seductive quality from this beast. on side b we re faced with the slightly more musical plutonium certainly, an exercise in distortion which is punctuated by repetitive androgynous chanting, and finally we culminate and release simultaneously with elika, an overtly ethereal blur somewhere between hope and melancholy. to fully appreciate nenads crafted subtlety, we recommend repeated listening.

nebraska is someone who’s tracks we’ve been loving for a good few years now and finally managed to pin him down for a release here on delusions of grandeur. the uk producer is something of an enigma, and despite some amazing releases on rush hour still remains resolutely underground and seems to keep his releases to a minimum, focusing on keeping the quality high rather than flooding the market with average material. once again, he brings the real deal with three drum-heavy warehouse jams to nice-up the dancefloor. aw-right (mute version) sets the tone with a raw house groove that keeps things stripped to the bare minimum. a bouncing bassline and rattling percussion break help to define the track but it’s the dusty, dubby approach to the mix which really makes the track shine. next up we have warp and weft, a similar sounding track but by dropping the bpm’s nebraska has created a sublime low-slung, bumpy groove to really move to. flipping over we’re treated to the brilliant eighty eights which will have you nodding your head like the churchill’s dog before you can say ‘looped up piano and bass one bar groove repeated for over eight and a half minutes shouldn’t work should it?’

arsat is the first argentinian telecom satellite launched into orbit. arsat gets the rocket ready to ignition: a repeated stabs loop manages the take-off with success. on remix duties, up-and-coming argentinian talent julixo delivers a jacking chicago-style interpretation of arsat. with beltran, the rocket starts its launch into space: although fast paced, the track brings some harmonious dubby elements and nice violins in the mix to calm down the expecting crowd: it s all going to be ok. formula ends the e.p. like a celebration of the satellite s geostationnary slot: a hard hitting, percussion driven, techno track where the stabs penetrate deep under your skin. not for the faint hearted!

albert van abbe has truly gained momentum this year with his new self-titled label vanabbe, a successful berghain live debut as well as releases on shipwrec and now trolldans. and you can tell! this trolldans release is filled with confidence and lucidity. the term ostinato refers to a continuously repeated musical pattern. its usually used in reference to classical music, but is well suited here. this ostinato, this stubbornness, gives the music a sense of pace and propulsion.

skylax welcomes f.t.g., known to house music scholars as freddy the groove, and his many friends for our next release in 2014. last year, f.t.g. and his italian partner in crime, marco riff (who also appears on this very record), pressed a very limited run of a single-sided, special throwback tribute to late 80s chicago house music. the track was aptly named ‘tribute ’89’, and it put a more dancefloor oriented twist on a track by a certain originator with the initials r.h. needless to say, it became highly sought-after incredibly quickly and fuel was further added to the fire by the repeated club play by none other than the dj idol ricardo villalobos. luckily for our followers, that original mix appears on this ep with another unreleased mix of the track and 2 originals featuring belfie and alex tea alongside f.t.g.with enough said about ‘tribute ‘89’ itself, the unreleased mix maintains the warehouse vibe with a heavy kick and bouncing bass pattern but takes it to another level with the introduction of rolling vocal cuts and a rather ravey synth line. flipping over the to b-side, we are treated with two tracks by f.t.g. and alex tea, named ‘public enemy’ and ‘bango’, with the former also seeing belfie lend a helping hand in the production. both of these originals round out the record nicely and cement it as another skylax release that is definitely not to be missed

bodyjack - a rough-ass bassline track with classic dance mania & relief style beats - it was originally passed onto five djs only: jackmaster, paul woolford, dave clarke, l-vis1990 & rolando all caned it. dancefloor reactions proving the track was a big underground joint. flip over for >i wanna be<: a twisted garage carnival workout. huxley dropped this immediately at we love at space in ibiza and it took off from there, and both tracks have been going off even having repeated plays on radio 1 and rinse fm.

femen is the second ep from hound scales on fifth wall, the brooklyn imprint he runs with divvorce. a dedication to the powerful women that have sculpted his life, the release sees the artist setting out to create the story of their impact on him by distilling these and other major influences into a techno format. the result is two originals blending amen-style jungle rhythms with collapsed industrial squeals, each with its own sense of beauty clawing upwards towards the surface.on the remix front, japanese producer and 10 label head honcho yuji kondo delivers an incredibly complex, layered interpretation of *a clique of tough women*, while mira and opal tapes affiliate bleaching agent pits the elegiac chords of the original *throated* against a repeated, mangled vocal motif, imbuing the remix with nostalgia while remaining an effective dancefloor instrument.
